(Airdate: September 9, 2020) Nan Evans meets Steve Grace on the beach at the Northwest Maritime Center in downtown Port Townsend. Steve had just come out of the water and shares what he just saw while snorkeling in our local waters. Part 1 of their conversation aired in early August.
On Monday, September 14 at 9:45am, Vicki Kirkpatrick, Jefferson County Public Health Director, and Willie Bence, Director of Emergency Management provided public updates during the County Commissioners’ weekly meeting about COVID-19 and our county’s preparedness.
Public Health Officer Dr. Tom Locke joined the meeting also, to address questions from KPTZ listeners. Potential for Phase 3 designation for Jefferson County was discussed, along with advise for getting the new flu shots.
Regarding the challenges for providing fresh air to reduce Covid-19 transmission, while smoke particles are at a dangerous level, Willie Bence stated that N95 masks are available to at-risk populations. Other options for safe open air space, are being explored.

First, as the U.S Census Bureau struggles to overcome the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and political maneuverings seemingly aimed at hampering its mission, KPTZ’s Chris Bricker spoke with the 2020 Census Jefferson County Project Director Jeannie McMacken and Jefferson County Commissioner Greg Brotherton about the logistics, the challenges, and the successes that good planning have brought to our County’s efforts. Both emphasize convincingly the importance of being counted before October 31st.
And then we catch up with the Board President of an amazing volunteer organization that is seeking to expand its mission to help foster children and their families at a time of most urgent need.

(Airdate: September 8, 2020) HOME ALONE FOR PTHS CLASS OF 2021. Our Town Host Maryanne McNellis interviews Melanie Bakin & Soso (Sorina) Johnston, members of the Port Townsend class of 2021. This year will be an unusual, if not surreal, experience. Due to the coronavirus, there will be no in-classroom learning first semester. Melanie will be returning full-time to PTHS. She loves the teachers and she loves the school. Upon reflection, Soso is taking a different path. Even though she was student body president during her junior year and was elected senior class president this year, she’s decided not to return full-time. She is going to be taking advantage of Running Start, which is a joint program between Peninsula College and the high school. Both students have their reasons. It is a daunting prospect to be learning entirely at a distance. High school will definitely not be as much fun! It will take real grit to buckle down in front of your computer day after day.
Because of the Labor Day holiday, this week’s County Public Health Meeting was rescheduled for Tuesday, September 8 at 9:45 am.

Dr. Tom Locke, Public Health Officer for Jefferson County answered questions from KPTZ listeners including information about Covid-19 vaccine priorities, thoughts on herd immunity, and advice on flu vaccinations. Willie Bence, Director of Emergency Management, provide information also spoke about the County’s mask and PPE preparedness.
