#230 Laura Lewis, Olfactory House

(Airdate: October 17, 2023) Maryanne interviews Laura Lewis, co-owner & distiller for the Olfactory House. Separately, she’s also co-owner of the Antique Mall in downtown Port Townsend. Laura has dreamed about creating new scents ever since she was a kid, fooling around with her grandmother’s makeup and perfumes. She soon discovered that creating a new scent actually comes down to chemistry. Her multiple degrees — including a doctorate — are all science-based. Laura had a flourishing career in academia and ran WSU’s Jefferson County operations for years. But she finally decided to chase her dream. The Olfactory House is now just over a year old. Clients can visit the elegant little shop near the rear of the Antique Mall. A variety of scented products are on sale. But the heart (and soul?) of the business is creating personalized new scents — or “bespoke” scents. The current price is $500 for consultations that refine a scent that captures your singular essence.

Our Working Waterfront ~ 10/10/23

Each month on alternate weeks, Tuesdays at 5:30 and Sundays at Noon, KPTZ’s Chris Bricker and his co-hosts, Port Director Eron Berg and Commissioner Pam Petranek bring you updates and stories from Port Townsend’s working waterfront. A new tradition was born this year, right here in our Boatyard!  A special celebration took place under the stars and in the glow of the full moon above the giant Marine Travelift. It was organized by the Port of Port Townsend and its sponsors to welcome our Fishing Fleet home. There were crew members, skippers, shipwrights and apprentices who keep these boats alive. There were brokers, townies, families, and children of all ages. They all gathered in a corner of the Yard for a truly local and authentic gathering. Roving the festivities with a field mic was never more fun!

Booklovers’ Cafe – Jane Haigh, Waiting for the Storm

(Airdate: October 10, 2023) Booklovers’ is pleased to talk to author Jane Haigh about her latest Green New Deal novel, Waiting for the Storm. This book uniquely imagines an area in New Hampshire 40 years from now that has made the infrastructure changes necessary to survive a climate-change-driven hurricane. What is particularly fascinating about this story is the way a small group of ordinary people get together to work in local politics and businesses and make positive changes in transportation, housing, and energy – a lesson that our area is also working towards. None of these solutions is science fiction.

Booklovers’ Cafe – Mitch Luckett, Holy Roller Heart

(Airdate: November 7, 2023) Cris Wilson welcomes author, storyteller and old time musician Mitch Luckett to Booklovers’ Cafe. Mitch‘s latest novel titled Holy Roller Heart is set in the Missouri Ozarks. The Portland Tribune says anyone with a taste for bazaar fiction will have plenty to feast on in these pages. I certainly agree. This story is set in the 1950s where a 13-year-old Moses Grady Witt is trying to straddle a barbwire fence between Pentecostal zealotry and Ozarkian witchery. The strain at times almost rips our hero apart. Mitch himself spent the first 12 years of his life on a hardscrabble farm in hills of Missouri. He eventually settled on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington, and has been a hod carrier, preschool teacher, landscaper, school bus, driver, and the Portland Audubon Nature sanctuary’s Director. He has also written two books set on the Olympic peninsula titled To kill a Common Loon and The Man in the Loon!
