Our Working Waterfront ~ 10/08/24

In this special edition of Our Working Waterfront we visit the Second Annual Boatyard BBQ, to celebrate the return of our Fishing Fleet and the 100th anniversary of the Port of Port Townsend. There was a delicious salmon dinner along with music and dancing. Captains and their crews, shipwrights and apprentices, the old and the young, longtime residents and new folks in town, all mingled beneath early-evening rainbows, a Salish wind, and the colored lights from the Travel Lift Stage well on into the night. We bring you sounds, music and stories from this magical time that brought out the true spirit of our Port Townsend community.

County Connections

(Airdate: October 4, 2024) Co-hosts Jim Burke and County Commissioner Kate Dean talk with Scott Mauk, Superintendant of Chimacum Schools, and Kurt Munnich, School Engagement, Early Intervention and Juvenile Probation. They discuss what used to be called “truancy”, and is now referred to in a more positive way as”engagement” – the ways in which students become disengaged and the ways in which schools, the county, and even the courts re-engage students and their parents to get them involved in school again.

Hosts Chris Bricker and Siobhan Canty, President & CEO of Jefferson Community Foundation, explore new paradigms and new developments surrounding our County’s good people doing good work! Chris and Siobhan have a conversation with the Food Service Directors Shannon Gray from Port Townsend School District and Justin Oas from Chimacum Schools. They’ll share their thoughts about how food service in the schools has evolved, especially with the incredible network of school gardens and other efforts that bring fresh food to student meals programs.

#251 Ann Rabb: Building Clean Homes

(Airdate: October 1, 2024) Maryanne interviews Ann Rabb, owner of architectural design firm Greenpod. For over 20 years Ann has been studying how to design and build healthy homes. Her passion is how to make homes green and healthy. The construction field has changed dramatically over the past two decades. For example, it’s now possible to do away with concrete foundations by using 6-feet-long screws to attach the building. “SIPs” construction is also becoming popular – that stands for “structurally insulated panels.” Forget what you think you know about modular homes – a lot has changed. Ann is looking for “solutions for singles and seniors.” Port Townsend has newer regulations allowing two ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units) on each property and has also approved tiny homes on wheels. Ann predicts both measures will help create more affordable housing. Her website — greenpod.design —showcases some possibilities.

(Airdate: October 1, 2024) We’ve discovered that at the mouth of the gorge that leads to the Bingling Caves, there was once a stone bridge that led across the Yellow River to the town of Linxia, 20 kilometers to the east. The Linxia area is known as one of the oldest known settlements in China. Just outside of Linxia, archeologists have discovered a 5000 year old village….

Jim Burke interviews Michael Bittman and John Lizwacko about the 40th Great Port Townsend Bay Kinetic Skulpture Race KOOK OFF, which takes place Oktober 5 and 6, 2024. Michael is the Kourse Kommissioner and John Is the Top Kop and President of the board! They discuss history, the course, and all the events leading up to the race events inkluding the Volunteers meeting at 7pm at the Legion Hall Thursday Night Oktober 3.
