Skillmation – Mentoring Our Future

the Port Townsend school district for more than five years, providing after-school tutoring for middle schoolers, mentoring freshman students working on entrepreneurial projects resulting in a “Market Day” as well as the annual Senior symposium. Brewocracy Now ~ 9/05/24

Port Townsend CIty Manager John Mauro and co-host Taylor Clark welcomed Dr. Suzy Ames, President of Peninsula College. We talked about a very interesting thirty-five million dollar ‘Recompete’ grant that has been received, spread across several organizations and governments in Clallam and Jefferson counties. This is a complex and far-reaching grant, so listen in and learn more. Dr Ames also points out that Fall quarter and Peninsula College is about to start and there is still space available in programs at the Fort Worden campus. Check pencol.edu for more information.

#687 Baby Dungeness Crabs and Light Traps

(Airdate: September 4, 2024) Dungeness crabs are hugely important in the Pacific Northwest – commercially, recreationally, ecologically, and traditionally. Yet scientists and resource managers don’t know how big the population is, how and why it varies over time, or how significant natural and human caused factors can impact these populations. Join Nan Evans to explore how new and cooperative efforts (and some very simple techniques) are trying to better understand the dynamic Dungeness crab populations.

County Public Health Report ~ 9/03/24

Public Health Officer for Clallam and Jefferson Counties, Dr. Allison Berry spoke about COVID-19 and the latest omicron variant KP-3 which is prevalent now in the community. The latest vaccine has the KP-2 variant in it which is closely related to KP-3 so it should provide good protection. Folks should not WAIT to get the vaccine, if you were thinking of waiting until around the holidays, especially if you are in a high-risk group (over 65, immunocompromised.) She said because it is so prevalent now that increasing protection with the vaccine is a good idea. If you had Covid this summer, it’s best to wait on getting the vaccine for two months past your last infection.

Director of Emergency Management Willie Bence spoke to the Commissioners about the mop-up of the 2620 Road Fire and that the fire risk level was lowered last week, which made charcoal barbecues possible for the Labor Day weekend. 

Neil Nelson, Newest City Council Member

(Airdate: September 3, 2024) Maryanne interviews Neil Nelson, the newest member of the Port Townsend City Council. A Council member is moving so Neil was selected to fill out the remaining 18 months of that term. Neil is founder of the residential construction firm Piece Wurx. As a General Contractor he is acutely aware of the housing shortcomings in our community. For the past three years he’s been on the Planning Commission, learning the ins and outs of zoning and other building regulations. He wants to help streamline the process and hopes to accelerate the addition of multi-family buildings in PT. He describes himself as an “eternal optimist”. He wants to work with the Council to “find ways to say yes” to thoughtful development. Right now, he’s coming up to speed on all city issues, including our growing pothole epidemic.

Silk

(Airdate: September 3, 2024) We’re in Gsnsu province and we’ve just arrived in the provincial capital of Lanzhou. Lanzhou hugs both banks of the Yellow River for more than 20 kilometers, and after Xi’an it’s the second largest city on the Silk Road—a position of which it’s immensely proud. The week we arrived, the city was preparing for it’s first Silk Road Festival.…

Adventuress Cooking

(Reprise airdates: September 2 and 9, 2024) After the business of the Wooden Boat Festival, KPTZ presents an encore of this special Attention Please! (original air date 10/30/2023). KPTZ’s Taylor Clark and Jim Burke head to the Boat Haven to meet with Adventuress cook George Clark to get a crew’s eye view of what goes on in the galley to keep everyone aboard well fed. Adventuress is a 133′ gaff-rigged schooner built in 1913 that is operated by the non-profit organization Sound Experience, providing environmental education in the Salish Sea.

County Connections

(Airdate: August 30, 2024) This week on County Connections Jim Burke and co-host Commissioner Kate Dean spoke with Erin Reading of the Port Townsend Psychedelic Society and Kristin Barnes ND who is a Navy Vet and a physician who works with veterans who suffer from PTSD. They discuss the decriminalization of entheogens in Jefferson County and the possible uses of natural substances, such as psilocybin mushrooms, in a therapeutic setting as opposed to recreational way.

Just Soup

(Airdate: August 29, 2024) Just Soup is a weekly free lunch program that has been serving the community for more than a decade and is housed at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Port Townsend. Volunteer cooks create a delicious meal and serve nearly 100 lunches each week. Join us as we discuss with Leslie Watkins this fabulous gathering time filled with laughter, music and most of all, soup.
