#285 Larry Stein – Programming Guru

(Airdate: May 12, 2026) Maryanne interviews Larry Stein, founding program director for KPTZ. Larry grew up in the shadow of the Hollywood studios and dreamed of being on the creative side of the industry. Years later he met up with four dreamers who believed in a community radio station in PT. None of them had any experience in radio. But Larry did! By that time he had years of experience at a community radio station in LA. After that fateful meeting at the PT farmers market (where else?) he joined the team. Larry was handed a dream assignment— creating programming for a brand new station. It wasn’t easy. But since going live in May 2011, KPTZ has become part of the foundation of this community. Larry’s vision of mixing everything from opera to hard rock turns out to be just the thing for this eclectic town.

Launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique, Make Music is celebrated on the same day in more than 2,000 cities in dozens of countries around the world. Completely different from a typical music festival, Make Music is open to anyone who wants to take part–from professional musicians to people who’ve never played an instrument or sung out loud. Music pours onto streets, parks, plazas, and porches to share with friends, neighbors, and strangers.

Make Music Day in East Jefferson County is back!  Joining to tell us more of our local plans for June 21 are Songwriting Works founder Judith-Kate Friedman, Board Member Victoria Reddick, Sponsor and Volunteer James Baburek, and Steering Committee Member Cecile Kummerer.

County Public Health Report ~ 5/04/26

This month Dr. Allison Berry said that we are seeing ‘minimal activity” with respiratory illnesses (RSV, Influenza, and COVID-19.) She noted concern about Measles in Washington state and elsewhere. But there are no documented cases in Jefferson, Clallam, or Kitsap Counties. She describes symptoms and best prevention, 97% of cases in the US currently are in unvaccinated individuals. In terms of reproductive health, the Supreme Court stayed an order from a lower court that temporarily stopped shipment of mifepristone.

There were questions from the Commissioners about May being Mental Health Awareness month. Questions from listeners about LONG COVID, tapeworm. wildfire smoke, and increases in violence, and a Port Townsend Free Press article and some potential misinformation, and how to navigate information found in the news media and social media.

Willie Bence said little, because he had no listener questions, and little time. He spoke of warmer than “normal” weather this summer and evacuation and fire safety.

And ALL COUNTY PREPAREDNESS DAY is on June 27 at 10 am at Finn River. The Department of Emergency Management is looking for someone to hire a Program Coordinator. See https://www.co.jefferson.wa.us/950/Dept-of-Emergency-Management and https://www.ejfr.org/.

It was determined by Dr. Berry, Willie Bence, and the Commission, that these reports will continue through the summer.
