Our Working Waterfront ~ 6/09/26

On alternate weeks each month, KPTZ’s Chris Bricker joins his co-hosts, Port of Port Townsend’s Director Eron Berg and Port Commissioner Pam Petranek to bring you news, updates and stories surrounding our vibrant maritime community. We’ll stop by Port Headquarters for an update on activity around the Port, And then head for the Boatyard to visit with Amy Shaub, the owner and operator of the fishing vessel Norsel, which is a wooden purse seiner built in 1950. She lives aboard, and she’s here to tell us the boat’s story, and talk about her own history and passion for fishing on the open water. 

#287 Eron Berg – Steering the Port of Port ownsend

(Airdate: June 9, 2026) Maryanne interviews Eron Berg, the Executive Director of the Port of Port Townsend. Maritime trades account for roughly 30% of all employment in PT and Berg manages it all, including things that most of us might not think of as part of the Port. For example, the airport is within his jurisdiction. His law degree is an asset when it comes to managing our complex, sprawling Port.

(Airdate: June 5, 2026) This week, Commissioner Heather Dudley-Nollette and Jim Burke welcome Roland Faragher-Horwell, the Board President of the Jefferson County Food Bank Association. Roland fills us in on the history of the Food Bank here in Jefferson County, the changes that have happened in the last year that point to the food bank growing and thriving with great volunteer support and the ongoing support of donors. They discuss the challenges in terms of greater need and rising fuel costs. To learn more about the Food Bank Association and their essential work go to jcfba.org and look at the annual report, donate, volunteer or utilize the food bank if there is greater need for FOOD in your household.

In the Garden

(Airdate: June 4, 2026) June In the Garden talks about critters that we share our community with and how we can co-exist peacefully. Dianna and Mary Beth talk about critters causing havoc in your vegetable garden. Julia and Barbara offer strategies to reduce deer and rabbit damage in any garden. The show airs every Thursday from 6-6:30 pm.

Think about the importance of biodiversity in our own local park. And see how communities and scientists have joined efforts across the world to learn more about ecosystems near and far. The 2026 BioBlitz at Fort Worden State Park is June 6 and 7. Come learn and have fun with like minded folks exploring our natural world.

County Public Health Report ~ 6/01/26

This month on the BOCC Public Health Report, Willie Bence started us off with info about fire danger and drought this summer. There is also the All-County Preparedness Day at Finnriver on June 27. Dr, Berry answered good listener questions and said there is increased COVID-19 presence in out wastewater, possibly due to more people visiting, but overall COVID-19 is very low now. (Airdate: May 29, 2026) For KPTZ’s small town BIG SOUND fundraiser, co-hosts Commissioner Greg Brotherton and Jim Burke have a spirited discussion about fireworks and the issues they pose, fire danger in the county this summer generally, the new bridge in the south county which allows for greater passage of chum salmon. And Greg responds to a listener question about the future of North Beach County Park.

Brewocracy Now ~ 5/28/26

KPTZ’s Taylor Clark and Port Townsend City Manager John Mauro were joined by Water Resources Operations Manager Michael Spears and Director of Public Works Steve King. We talked about the situation with our water. The City anticipates starting to draw from Lords Lake about six weeks earlier than normal, and the city just obtained State approval to raise Lords Lake three feet for this drought season which gives us two additional weeks of water than we would have otherwise.
