#724 The Nature of Anderson Lake

(Reprise Airdate: May 21, 2025) Nature Now host Jackie Canterbury talks with Bev McNeil about the nature of Anderson Lake State Park. The park encompasses 496 acres of land with a diversity of plant communities, wetlands, and forests. The name bears the family name of an earlier owner, Amanda Anderson. The land was purchased in 1947. The park now offers trails that pass along the lake and through grassy marches, patches of salmonberries and huckleberries and through forests of young and older western red cedar and Douglas-fir.

Silk – 71

(Airdate: May 20, 2025) We’re in Gansu Province, visiting the town of Jiayuguan and the Great Wall Museum. The “Great Wall” part isn’t all that great, but our disappointment was somewhat mollified by a wing that included the mummified remains of several women. The exhibit also included dozens of painted bricks that once decorated the walls of the tombs where the corpses were found….

#723 Plankton Worlds, part 1

(Reprise airdate: May 14, 2025) Ancient bacteria, single cells and long strands of strange little plants, plus minute single celled animals and weird fantastical animal larvae – these are the members of the Earth’s massive and hugely important planktonic ecosystems. Come with Nan Evans as she talks with Dr. Gretchen Rollwagen-Bollens about this strange world and its significance to global ecology and human well being. Consider eutrophication, the world’s biggest threat to water quality or cyanobacteria and one of the causes of toxic algal blooms such as the ones in our local Andeson Lake.

#264 Bob Wheeler, PT Golf Park

(Airdate: May 13, 2025) Maryanne interviews Bob Wheeler, the President of the Friends of Port Townsend Golf Park. The nonprofit group has only been in charge of the historic golfing grounds for a little more than a year. But there are big changes. The greens have been totally groomed and revamped. Now every day groups of young 20 or 30 somethings show up to play disc golf, which is a form of frisbee golf. Families picnic on the grounds and a new playground will be installed shortly – funds permitting. Miniature golf is in the works, as are outdoor movies. The revamped clubhouse or restaurant is opening soon. This is not your classic country club – it’s open to everyone. It’s also the cheapest golf course in the region, by far.
