(Airdate: April 8, 2025) Corrin Da Costa visits Booklovers’ Cafe to talk about her novel Dead Daddy Issues: Daughters and Fathers Life and Death – Sometimes it’s Complicated. It certainly is! This novel explores grief, guilt, families and tarot cards. This book takes the main character Leia home again but as Thomas Wolfe famously wrote you can’t go home again. There are many twists in the plot and the reader is along for the ride hoping for the best.

Spike Africa (pictured above) is the last coasting schooner, with a proud history of carrying America’s goods across the world’s oceans. Her every detail combines beauty and grace with sturdy seaworthiness. Built by poet and designer Robert Sloan, Spike Africa was named after the legendary sailor of the same name, who was lovingly and humorously monikered “President of the Pacific Ocean.” This iconic Schooner is in our boatyard on the hard and getting thorough attention from a flock of fine shipwrights. We speak with Spike’s current owner Wade Hall, with Doug Jones who’s creating the new foremast, and with Ian Weedman, owner of Brian Toss Yacht Riggers.
(Airdate: April 8, 2025) We’re in the towns of Jinguan or “Wine Spring,” We’ve just concluded our visit to the spring. On our way back into town, we stopped at a museum that had the usual collection of stones and bones and busted pots, but it did feature one unusual exhibit.
This month on the Public Health Report to the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners, there was a public declaration at the top naming April 7 to 13 Public Health Week here in Jefferson County as it is Public Health Week nationwide. Then Dr. Allison Berry talked about the special challenges facing Washington State and the county due to the cuts in funding from the federal and state governments. Willie Bence talked about FEMA and Wildfire prep. Property owners can go to wildfireready.dnr.wa.gov and get a free assessment from East Jefferson Fire Rescue of their property and the ways they can make property and homes safer from wildfire. Willie said after a relatively “normal” spring we can expect hotter and drier conditions July through September. The assessment is free, and is available until June.

Robert Wittenberg, Community Risk Manager with East Jefferson Fire Rescue (EJFR), walks and talks with KPTZ’s Jon Pinnow, discussing how homeowners can prepare for the growing threat and giving practical advice on how to make homes and landscapes safer. This conversation is part of a broader push to help communities across Washington get Wildfire Ready – and, thanks to EJFR, free home assessments are available right here in East Jefferson County.
