Community Tides ~ 11/04/25


For over 65 years, United Good Neighbors has rallied the community to strengthen front-line nonprofits that meet basic needs. This year’s Give Jefferson Campaign is more important than ever, as budget cuts threaten the very programs your neighbors depend upon. Significant cuts from the federal and state budgets have the potential to erode the strength of our local nonprofits and community serving government agencies dedicated to serving those in our community who need the most support.  KPTZ’s Chris Bricker & Siobhan Canty, President & CEO of Jefferson Community Foundation, discuss the important topic of budget cut impacts and the current Give Jefferson Campaign with Denise Banker, Jefferson County Public Health’s Community Health Division Director; Christie Kisler; Director of Nonprofit Services for Jefferson Community Foundation; and Amanda Milholland, Executive Director for Jefferson County Farmers Markets.

Booklovers’ Cafe – Thomas Kohnstamm, Super Sonic

(Airdate: November 4, 2025) Cris talks to Seattle author Thomas Kohnstamm about his latest novel Supersonic. This is a book of place, specifically, Seattle. He says “Seattle isn’t the Space Needle or the Fremont Troll,” but rather the interactions between neighbors, the waves of people entering the city, and the constant process of building. The novel tells the stories of four families over 150 years of Seattle history, and delves into what Kohnstamm calls the mythology of the city in a way only a book written by someone born and raised here could.

Today most all of the six million Uyghurs in China are Muslims, and they wear the skulk cap that Muslims wear the world over. But during their moment of glory, where they controlled most of central Asia from their base in Mongolia, they wore their hair beneath the sky, and they bowed to the sun instead of Mecca….

County Public Health Report ~ 11/03/25

Dr. Allison Berry said that the latest local surge of COVID -19 is abating, but Influenza is on the rise. She recommends the flu vaccine for all and said that if you need a COVID booster, the flu vaccine and an RSV shot it’s fine to get them at the same time. She also spoke about SNAP benefits which are up in the air right now. She said the people most affected by this are Veterans and children, and said the better fed that people are, the less likely they are to contract disease and place a greater burden on the healthcare system. Willie Bence said there is a seminar on WINTER PREPAREDNESS at the Jefferson County Library in Port Hadlock on Tuesday, November 4 at 10:30am (which is Election Day, by the way).

County Connections

(Airdate: October 31, 2025) Commissioner Greg Brotherton and co-host Jim Burke welcome from the Jefferson County Historical Society, Executive Director Tara McCauley. They discuss the place of LORE alongside history and tell stories of GHOSTS, BIGFOOT, and THE MONKEY’S PAW for Halloween. Brewocracy Now ~ 10/30/25

KPTZ’s Taylor Clark was joined by three Port Townsend department heads: Police Chief Tom Olson, Planning Director Emma Bolin, and Director of Public Works Steve King. We explored what is happening with respect to the proposed closing of the homeless encampment on the Evans Vista property. We talked about the city’s partnership with assistance organizations, and the city council’s action to streamline the permitting process for help these organizations respond to homelessness.

#273 Steve King, Planning Our Future

(Airdate: October 28, 2025) Maryanne interviews Steve King, Port Townsend’s Public Works Director. Steve’s been grappling with our complex issues since he joined the city five years ago. An early accomplishment was getting the mill to pay for water usage, just like any other customer. Some of the pipes for our water system are over 100 years old. Steve’s team is racing the clock – trying to replace those pipes before they collapse. That’s just one issue facing the town. The lack of affordable housing and the sorry state of our streets are also major issues. Voters overwhelmingly passed a measure to raise taxes to help pay for street repairs. Results aren’t in yet but that money only began to flow in 2024. The lack of workforce housing  – aka affordable housing  – is also on everyone’s radar.

(Airdate: October 28, 2025) We’re in Xinjiang, China’s so-called Uyghurs Autonomous Province. The Uyghurs are the largest ethnic group in the province, with 45 percent of the population, and the Han Chinese are close behind with 40 percent. Still, 99 percent of the power is in the hands of the Chinese….
