Rachel Fordham, Beyond Ivy Walls
(Airdate: December 3, 2024) Rachel Fordham visits Booklovers’ Cafe for a second time to introduce her newest historical novel, Beyond Ivy Walls. Set in Monticello, Iowa in 1903, the story revolves around a farm girl who needs to help support her family by working at the Hoag Family Feather Duster Factory! Yes, this establishment really existed here. Unable to afford rent, Sadie finds shelter in an abandoned building. A dog helps connect Sadie to sympathetic humans who are trying to find a missing niece. The themes revolve around the human concerns of family, acceptance, and love.

(Airdate: December 3, 2024) We’re in Gansu Province in the town of Wuwei, visiting the tomb where China’s famous Bronze Horse was discovered in 1969. It’s no coincidence that such a beautiful piece of sculpture was buried here. The horse was the key to military operations on the Silk Road, and it turns out that the Wuwei area is still one of China’s major horse racing centers. The camel may have carried the bulk of merchandise, but the horse carried those who sought to maintain control of the road.

County Public Health Report ~ 12/02/24
This month, Dr. Allison Berry, Public Health Officer for Clallam and Jefferson Counties, issued the Public Health Report to the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC), and said there is very little COVID-19 in Jefferson County, but there is a slight uptick in surrounding areas, in ER admissions for COVID-19. Uptake of the vaccine booster is low, so she did encourage those who are at greatest risk to get the shot. Because Covid is no longer a national or state emergency, programs from Jefferson County Public Health to send people to homes and facilities where elderly populations live are not bringing the boosters directly to them. Avian infuenza has not seen a human to human transmission as of yet. There are some isolated cases in the US and in Canada of patients who have contracted the virus from other sources. Anyone with a domestic flock is encouraged to avoid interactions with wild birds, especially around water sources. Willie Bence, Director of Emergency Management, was not in attendance this month.
