Our Working Waterfront ~ 12/10/24

Each month KPTZ’s Chris Bricker joins co-hosts Port Director Eron Berg and Port Commissioner Pam Petranek to bring you news, updates and stories surrounding our Port and our vibrant maritime community. Our 300-ton yard is absolutely full this month! Eron gives us a season’s update for the Port, and then we’ll explore the fate of the abandoned tugboat Elmore (pictured above) with shipwright Clint Thomas, who spent a decade maintaining and repairing the Elmore during just one part of this storied vessel’s recent life. Now the Elmore sits on the hard amid historic schooners and working fishing vessels – all of them surrounding her as if they were perched as guardians of its 135 years of history.  The Elmore faces an uncertain future.

(Airdate: December 10, 2024) We’re visiting an underground tomb just north of the garrison town of Wuwei in Gansu Province. That is where China’s famous bronze horse was found in 1969. The tomb itself is not all that noteworthy except that, being it’s the grave of a Han Dynasty general. and there’s a shrine on top of the grave mound in honor of Leigong, the Duke of Thunder. This is where officials came to pray for rain or for victory against the Huns. On our way back we passed a pagoda, whose bells sang in the wind and told us a story.

Chimacum Crafts Fair and More

Laura’s Tapes: A Tribute to Laura Martin 

On Sunday, December 15 from 1-2pm on KPTZ, listen to Laura’s Tapes, a musical tribute to Port Townsend icon Laura Martin. Laura was a lover of songs, dancing, and folklore. This one-hour radio mixtape was curated from her collected cassette tape collection. Tune in for choral music, songs of the British Isles, independent folk releases from the Pacific Northwest and beyond, instrumentals of various traditions, and a few stories. Compiled by Ruby Fitch, engineered by Neville Pearsall, and produced by Taylor Clark. 

County Connections

(Airdate: December 6, 2024) This week, Jim Burke and co-host Commissioner Greg Brotherton welcome District 2 Commissioner-elect Heather Dudley-Nolette. They discuss several of the many boards and commissions that the Commissioner-elect will be serving on when she assumes office.

Brewocracy Now ~ 12/05/24

Taylor Clark and John Mauro welcomed Chimacum Schools Superintendent Dr. Scott Mauk. We had an interesting discussion about change management – the process of having a vision of the future and then encouraging a good faith dialogue about what changes might be needed to move in that direction.

Community Tides ~ 12/05/24

Each month KPTZ’s Chris Bricker and co-host Siobhan Canty, President & CEO of Jefferson Community Foundation, explore new paradigms and new developments surrounding our County’s good people doing good work. This is the time of year when it’s always good to highlight some our community’s needs, especially in terms of advocacy. Chris and Siobhan speak with Elsa Goits from Foster Care Support of Jefferson County, with Jean Pepper from the P.U.D.’s Rainy Day Fund, and with our dear friends from Jefferson County Immigrants Rights Advocates. We’ll also talk about the importance of the Give Jefferson Campaign as a way to support local direct service organizations.
