County Connections
(Airdate: February 21, 2025) This week on County Connections, Jim Burke and his co-host Commissioner Heidi Eisenhour welcome Richard Davies, Director of Jefferson Associated Council, contracted by the county to provide public defense, and Derek Young, Interim Executive Director Washington State Association of Counties (WSAC). Derek is advocating for HB-1592 which would increase state funding for public defenders across the sate so there might be PARITY. Currently the public defense here in Jefferson County is over 95% paid by the county. Listen below for more alarming stats as well for as ways in which agencies in the county are working to intervene before people commit crimes, or are ever charged with a crime, to lessen the case load of attorneys, and keep vulnerable members of society out of the criminal justice system if possible. HB-1805 is another bill which aims to fund programs to help youth across the state stay out of trouble.

KPTZ’s Taylor Clark talked with Emma Bolin, Director of Planning and Community Development, and Steve King, Director of Public works. We revisited the golf course/housing situation (it’s off the docket and not being considered) as well as the Water Street sewer project. The main topic was the Shoreline Master Plan project update, and there will be meetings tonight (February 20) at 5:30 at the Cotton Building and again on March 12, same time and location. #260 Diane McDade: Swimming in Politics
(Airdate: February 18, 2025) Maryanne interviews Diane McDade, President of Jefferson County Aquatic Coalition (JAC), the citizens group behind the drive for a new pool in Jefferson County. The committee is about 20-years-old and so far no new pool. But changes could be coming relatively soon. The installation of a new sewer system in the Hadlock/Chimacum area should help break the log jam. Diane has been into political action since she was a kid. Her parents were politically active and she watched and learned. She worked on many significant political campaigns, including Patty Murray’s election to the US Senate. Diane also enjoyed a career at Microsoft when not totally immersed in politics. Since moving to PT she’s also become fascinated by the history of North Beach. Expect a book on North Beach tracing (among other things) the story of the Chinese farmers who were ultimately forced out of the region.
