Our Working Waterfront ~ 5/13/25

Each month, KPTZ’s Chris Bricker and his co-hosts, Port of Port Townsend’s Director Eron Berg and Port Commissioner Pam Petranek cover the waterfront—its boats, its people and their stories. In this month’s edition, Chris, Eron and Pam, along with Commissioners Carol Hasse and Pete Hanke (today’s Captain) board the Puget Sound Express with 120 visiting Harbormasters and staffers as they wrapped up the three-day Spring Pacific Coast Congress of Harbormasters and Port Managers. The event culminated in a special journey via the harbor, for exclusive tours of the Bay & Waterfront, the Northwest School of Wooden Boat Building, and our internationally acclaimed Boatyard. Our Working Waterfront tagged along!

#264 Bob Wheeler, PT Golf Park

(Airdate: May 13, 2025) Maryanne interviews Bob Wheeler, the President of the Friends of Port Townsend Golf Park. The nonprofit group has only been in charge of the historic golfing grounds for a little more than a year. But there are big changes. The greens have been totally groomed and revamped. Now every day groups of young 20 or 30 somethings show up to play disc golf, which is a form of frisbee golf. Families picnic on the grounds and a new playground will be installed shortly – funds permitting. Miniature golf is in the works, as are outdoor movies. The revamped clubhouse or restaurant is opening soon. This is not your classic country club – it’s open to everyone. It’s also the cheapest golf course in the region, by far.

Silk

(Airdate: May 13, 2025) After the first emperor united China’s warring states in 221BC, he ordered construction of the wall in order to protect its empire from the periodic invasions from the nomadic tribes to the north. He assigned this monumental task to one of his generals, Meng Tien.

Community Unity

(Airdate: May 12, 2025) Fund Drive special about Community Unity. Lightweight Champion Performs a Live-Recording Concert at Rainshadow

KPTZ is excited to join Rainshadow Recording in welcoming Lightweight Champion to the Rainshadow Recording Studios for a live-recording concert on Saturday, May 24 at 7:30pm. Lightweight Champion is a musical collaboration among four seasoned Seattle-based musicians, focused around the songwriting of lead singer Aaron Spieldenner who now resides in Port Townsend. The group evokes a range of emotions with their sound built upon strong themes and lyrical songwriting. Live, the band’s arrangements are infectious, with tight vocal harmonies and dancey rhythmic interplay. Topically, the band’s music is far-reaching – covering issues ranging from wide-scope commentaries on the world and our relationship to it, to more introspective observations focused on the relatable and interpersonal. As for influences, catch Spieldenner at an open mic a couple nights a week – he cites many of his peers as prominent influences for his writing, including LC collaborator and longtime friend Gabriel Delayne.

County Connections

(Airdate: May 9, 2025) Co-hosts Jim Burke and Commissioner Heather Dudley-Nolette welcome Prosecuting Attorney James Kennedy. This is part of Heather’s County Government 101 series (What does the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office do?) It turns out, a lot more than prosecute. The office also advises and defends the county.
