(First airdate: August 14, 2018) ARIEL SPESER: TRYING TO SOLVE THE UNSOLVABLE. Our Town Host Maryanne McNellis interviews Ariel Speser of the Northwest Justice Project. The non-profit law firm handles cases ranging from eviction or foreclosure, to domestic disputes or sexual assault. The common thread is that their clients cannot afford to pay the going rate for a lawyer. Ariel always knew she wanted to help those in need – particularly children. She wins more often than she loses. But each case is a unique challenge for her. She brings endless enthusiasm to her 90 hour work week and still finds time to be on the Port Townsend City Council.

This week on the Compass, we go back to a July 2015 show where Chris Bricker speaks with experts about kayak safety in a program prompted by the deaths of Jacob Austin and Mandi Walkley, who were among seven members of a Tumwater church group who went kayaking off the Dungeness Spit when high winds and high seas capsized their boats, plunging them into the 48-degree water.

Darrell and Lorna Smith of Western Wildlife Outreach handle both the hosting and guest duties to discuss the current status of black bears and cougars on the Olympic Peninsula and western Washington, and provide safety tips for recreating, living and working in areas occupied by these large carnivores. Closing music is “Cougar,” performed by Johnny Whitehorse.
It’s Fair Play
The Jefferson County Fair is underway, and KPTZ is on hand for all the fun and games. Do stop by to visit our booth and introduce yourself, some of your favorite hosts will be on hand throughout this weekend. We’d love to see you and hand off a new “MOVE KPTZ” magnet, bumper sticker decal, and tell you about our Emergency Response Team. Plus, we have a station slide show in our exhibit.
Fair opening day Friday featured a live broadcast of Tossed Salad from the stage all afternoon. There were five outstanding musical performances along with guests from many of this year’s exhibits and Fair staff.
The above photo was taken during Friday’s broadcast, when host Phil Andrus (center, in rear) turned the interview microphone over to Tim Quackenbush (right) and Chris Bricker (standing). Their guests were Rambo, the precocious llama, his 4-H friend and handler Kayana, whose sister Taylor (left rear) also answered questions. Rambo pretty much stole the show!
PT Film Festival – 19 Years Growing
(First airdate: August 7, 2018) Join Everybody Can‘s Missy Nielsen as she talks with the folks at the Port Townsend Film Festival. Sonny Flores, Festival Operations Manager, and the newest member of the film family, Charlie Van Glider, volunteer coordinator, share insights on some of the more interesting volunteer opportunities at the 19th Annual Film Festival coming September 21-23 to a theater near you.
