KPTZ Pickathon Contest

Pickathon is world-famous for being the only music festival that prioritizes sustainable ethics. To help celebrate, we’ve got a KPTZ contest for you! What do you do to protect the environment? Share your tips with us on how you recycle/reuse and help preserve our world for future generations, in 500 words or less. Two winners will EACH receive a pair of 3-day tent-camping passes (worth $650 value for two tickets) to the 21st Pickathon Festival*. Send your entry by July 25 to [email protected]. We will be sharing your tips on the air with KPTZ listeners!

This year’s Pickathon Festival is the weekend of August 2-4 in Happy Valley OR, in the shadow of Mt. Hood. Featuring 60 nationally acclaimed and emerging artists on six stages. Headliners include…Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Damien Jurado, and Phil Lesh and the Terrapin Family Band. This is an all-ages event!

Compass for the Week of 7/22/2019

Summer is upon us with warm sunny weather, and the waters of the Olympic shore beckon to boaters of every stripe to come play. So this week on the Compass we reprise a show produced previously by veteran kayaker and KPTZ DJ Chris Bricker on the subject of kayak safety, which was motivated by the tragic deaths of two kayakers off the Dungeness Spit when the weather suddenly turned bad in April of 2015.

#138 Ken Collins: PUD Commissioner

(First airdate: July 16, 2019) Our Town host Maryanne McNellis, interviews Ken Collins, PUD Commissioner & founder of Marrowstone Vineyards. Ken had wanted to relocate to the Olympic Peninsula for decades, but couldn’t financially swing it until he retired from his first career as a counselor and social worker. After moving to Marrowstone, he says it was probably “misplaced ambition” that got him into the wine business. He worked hard to turn his stunning five acres on Marrowstone Island into a working vineyard. But he’s since sold the vineyard and turned his attention to our Public Utility District (PUD). In addition to his role as Commissioner on the Jefferson County PUD he’s also on the board of the state-wide industry group. He’s pitching hard to get funds to improve internet access in rural Jefferson County.

David Timmons, who served as Port Townsend’s first and only City Manager, retired last month after an unprecedented twenty-year stint in a job that burns most people out in five. On this week’s Compass, Timmons visits KPTZ studios for a live chat with reporter Charlie Bermant about how Port Townsend has evolved, his role in that evolution and what he expects for the town’s future.

Predicting Ocean “Weather” with Coastal Modeling

(First airdate: July 11, 2019) Dr. Parker MacCready is the lead developer of a University of Washington computer model that can predict conditions in Puget Sound and off the coast of Washington three days into the future. Called LiveOcean, this cool tool has a broad range of applications and the potential to be a game-changer for Washington’s shellfish industry and others.
