Compass for the Week of 12/16/2019

This week on the Compass, in a reprise of a show originally aired in July of 2018, we talk with volunteer firefighters who want YOU to join them in saving lives and property. Ever thought about being a volunteer firefighter? Regardless of your age, gender or experience, you might qualify for this life-changing experience … and maybe even earn some money.

Tossed Salad Holiday Extravaganza at the Museum

KPTZ and the Jefferson County Historical Society are teaming up to co-host the 2019 Tossed Salad Holiday Extravaganza on Friday, December 13 from Noon to 5pm at the Jefferson Museum of Art & History, in historic City Hall. This is an all-ages event, open to the public.

Host Phil Andrus will broadcast Tossed Salad live from the Museum for the station’s third annual holiday celebration of local music and lively personalities. This year’s lineup kicks off with jazz vocalist Carla Main, includes interviews with Key City Public Theatre luminaries, performance by kid-favorite Harmonica Pocket, a reading by Bruce and Flossie Bode, and much more. Extravaganza Extras! Guests are invited to participate in kid-friendly holiday card making with a printmaking open studio in the gallery and the entire museum will be free and open for all attendees to explore, including the “creepy jail.” The museum gift shop will be open with a supersale of major discounts on books and other merch for all your gift giving needs, with gift wrapping available.

The main floor of the museum is ADA accessible with an entrance off of Madison Street to an elevator. This is an all-ages, free event, open to the public, with a $5 suggested donation to benefit both JCHS and KPTZ Radio. American Legion Hall Answers the Call

(First airdate: December 10, 2019) COAST (Community Outreach Association Shelter Team) partners with the American Legion Post #26 and OlyCAP to provide nightly shelter for adults in downtown Port Townsend. Mike Johnson of OlyCap and Skip Cadorette of COAST describe the needs and resources required to provide this critical service for our homeless neighbors. Missy Nielsen of Everybody Can explores how we can  help to support this essential resource.

Recycling Fiberglass Boats

(First airdate: December 5, 2019) For this month’s Coastal Cafe we talk about recycling fiberglass boats that have arrived at the end of their useful lives. Evan Ridley from Rhode Island Marine Trades Association and Heidi Eisenhour from the Northwest Maritime Center in Port Townsend discuss a novel approach to disposing derelict fiberglass boats through the cement manufacturing process.
