In mid-November of last year, our district’s Democratic U.S. Congressman Derek Kilmer was given the inaugural Convergence Award for Extraordinary Leadership in Bridge-Building for heading up multiple bipartisan initiatives during a time of historically deep divisions between the parties. This week on the Compass we talk with Representative Kilmer about working in Washington in the toxic atmosphere surrounding the January 6 insurrection and the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump, along with other issues from the climate change crisis to the new pandemic stimulus bill.

On Tuesday, February 9, KPTZ presented a live broadcast dialogue on KPTZ about creating long-term solutions to homelessness locally with panelists Beulah Kingsolver of Dove House and Cherish Cronmiller of OlyCAP. The discussion was moderated by County Commissioner Kate Dean with the aim of advancing thinking and dialogue about homelessness locally so that future decision-making can be done with the community less polarized, more informed, more compassionate, and engaged in solutions.
KPTZ’s Forum on Homelessness is supported by our community partners in compassion and justice: Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Cunnington Dental, and Blue Wave Sanitization.

Through Science to Health ~ 2/12/21

One must be nimble to respond to the changing landscape of the pandemic. Lynn Sorensen, RN and Chris Bricker, KPTZ host had prepared for Through Science to Health earlier on February 11, only to have Governor Inslee announce later that same day that the Northwest Region – Jefferson, Clallam, Mason, and Kitsap Counties – were being advanced to Phase 2 in Washington’s Roadmap to Recovery. Other topics discussed:

  • Advancing to Phase 2 will benefit businesses such as restaurants and bars by allowing indoor seating to 25% of their capacity (see coronavirus.wa.gov for details).
  • In addition, the UK variant virus has been identified in King, Snohomish, and Pierce Counties. The UK Variant is more infectious than COVID-19 and double masking is recommended to reduce risk of transmission.
  • A better fitting mask (or two masks) equals better protection for the wearer.
  • Vaccine, vaccine, whose got the vaccine? Uncertainty in vaccine allocation and supply continues to be a problem in Jefferson County.

(First airdate: February 9, 2021) CAROLYN SALMON: A VISION FOR SENIORS TO SHARE. Our Town host Maryanne McNellis interviews Carolyn Salmon, president of the owners association at Quimper Village. This senior co-housing development speaks to the emerging consensus among many seniors that assisted living isn’t for them. But they realize they might also need some assistance. It’s a network of friends purchasing townhouses in a new development. They intend to take care of each other as much as they can. Currently, communal dinners and the like are on hold due to COVID-19. So far the COVID-free group has kept to outdoor activities. But they are anxious to return to group events. Quimper Village is perhaps an idealized view of small town interconnectedness. But the group seems determined to make it work.

Marine Science Center

(Airdate: February 8, 2021) Janine Boire, Executive Director of the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, talks with KPTZ host Larry Stein. Our beloved learning, research and activity center on the beach at Fort Worden is buzzing with activity, even though the Science Center itself must be closed for in-person visits. Nonetheless, you can participate in a Virtual Beach-Walk or Clean-up – Track the growth of Tiny the octopus or baby abalone in the Aquarium – attend the annual Benefit Auction for the MSC.
