Contagion of Another Kind – Stepping Up

(Airdate: February 16, 2021) Each of us has the opportunity to participate and shape the community we choose to live in. From time to time we run across folks who fly far under the radar, serving our community in the most humble and discreet ways. Consider the journey of these individuals and the contagious impact they have on our community. Join Missy Nielsen of Everybody Can as she speaks with Kevin Campbell and the Gardening Crone on F Street about how they both found a way to give back to the community in their own unique way.

Our Working Waterfront ~ 2/15

On this edition of Our Working Waterfront, Eron Berg, the Port’s Executive Director, gives us a recap of the past month’s activities around the busy Port. Port Commissioner Pam Petranek and Eron discuss the “Strong Towns” community conversation that took place February 4, along with some insightful responses from the public. We discuss our Port’s economic centers, the ongoing planning process in Quilcene, and then finish with highlights from the ship and boat yard. Businesses are seeking new
talent, sails are being recycled – and the Shipwright’s Co-op is celebrating 40 years of a successful journey!

Compass for 2/13/21

In mid-November of last year, our district’s Democratic U.S. Congressman Derek Kilmer was given the inaugural Convergence Award for Extraordinary Leadership in Bridge-Building for heading up multiple bipartisan initiatives during a time of historically deep divisions between the parties. This week on the Compass we talk with Representative Kilmer about working in Washington in the toxic atmosphere surrounding the January 6 insurrection and the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump, along with other issues from the climate change crisis to the new pandemic stimulus bill.

Radio Forum: Listen Here

Hour 1
Hour 2

On Tuesday, February 9, KPTZ presented a live broadcast dialogue on KPTZ about creating long-term solutions to homelessness locally with panelists Beulah Kingsolver of Dove House and Cherish Cronmiller of OlyCAP. The discussion was moderated by County Commissioner Kate Dean with the aim of advancing thinking and dialogue about homelessness locally so that future decision-making can be done with the community less polarized, more informed, more compassionate, and engaged in solutions.
KPTZ’s Forum on Homelessness is supported by our community partners in compassion and justice: Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Cunnington Dental, and Blue Wave Sanitization.

Through Science to Health ~ 2/12/21

One must be nimble to respond to the changing landscape of the pandemic. Lynn Sorensen, RN and Chris Bricker, KPTZ host had prepared for Through Science to Health earlier on February 11, only to have Governor Inslee announce later that same day that the Northwest Region – Jefferson, Clallam, Mason, and Kitsap Counties – were being advanced to Phase 2 in Washington’s Roadmap to Recovery. Other topics discussed:

  • Advancing to Phase 2 will benefit businesses such as restaurants and bars by allowing indoor seating to 25% of their capacity (see coronavirus.wa.gov for details).
  • In addition, the UK variant virus has been identified in King, Snohomish, and Pierce Counties. The UK Variant is more infectious than COVID-19 and double masking is recommended to reduce risk of transmission.
  • A better fitting mask (or two masks) equals better protection for the wearer.
  • Vaccine, vaccine, whose got the vaccine? Uncertainty in vaccine allocation and supply continues to be a problem in Jefferson County.
