L to R: Apprentice Patrick Kingshill, Shipwrights Leo Goolden, Erik Fahlstrom, and Peter Stein

KPTZ Host Chris Bricker checks in with Port Director & Co-Host Eron Berg for his monthly update on all things Port. And then Port Commissioner & Co-Host Pam Petranek introduces young shipwrights Peter Stein, Erik Fahlstrom, and Leo Goolden, along with volunteer apprentice and sculptor, Patrick Kingshill.
Chris has a conversation with them about how the marine trades’ 40 year history of synergy here in the Boatyard has cultivated a giving atmosphere where craftsmanship is shared through true apprenticeship.
Peter and Erik have rented the buildings formerly occupied by the Shipwrights Co-Op, and are providing another haven for independent workers to garner and share more skills. Leo just moved his business, Sampson Boat Company, and his boat, Tally Ho, to Pete and Erik’s expanding adventure as their new business tenant. They’re all examples of how a rising tide of cooperation is one that lifts all boats.

Housing Forum

Housing Solutions Network is partnering with all six Port Townsend City Council candidates for an important and timely forum on housing coming up on Saturday, July 17 from 3-5pm. The public is invited to take part in this unique event, located in downtown Port Townsend at the Cotton Building. The forum will be moderated by Housing Solutions Network and will also be broadcast live on KPTZ and on a Facebook livestream on Housing Solutions Network’s page. The public is invited to submit questions ahead of time for the candidates here

Housing issues have dominated conversations throughout our region, with concern rising over how to care for unsheltered individuals and how our economy will recover with an ever dwindling amount of housing that is affordable for local workers. HSN will touch on each part of this spectrum of housing needs, but with a special focus on workforce housing. Housing Solutions Network is a Jefferson County-based initiative to engage community members in powering new solutions for affordable housing.

#180 Marc Hilt: Riding the Mobile Bike Biz

(Airdate: July 13, 2021) Our Town host Maryanne McNellis interviews Marc Hilt, owner of Shining Star Cycles, a mobile bike repair business. Marc’s passion is bikes, particularly racing bikes. He raced for years, setting some national records. But winning races is pretty much a youngster’s game, so Marc played it forward. His passion became his career. He had a bike shop but figured out a fairly unique niche. Mobile bike service is a concept that’s pretty big in Europe but relatively new in the USA. Sparsely populated Jefferson County seemed like a good place to test the concept. So if you need your bike serviced or repaired Marc will come to you in his fully loaded (with bike parts) van. He also positions that van near the Olympic Discovery Trail so locals and tourists can have their bikes serviced before heading out on that spectacular ride. After all, there are no bike shops west of Port Angeles. We all know that good jobs are fairly scarce around here. But Marc’s a home town boy who has managed to create a business he loves.

County Public Health Report ~ 7/12

The following is a summary of the presentation made by Dr. Tom Locke, our local Public Health Officer and Willie Bence, Director, DEM, Jefferson County, during the Public Health briefings at this week’s Board of County Commissioners meeting. The summary was provided by and used with the permission of Jefferson County Government.

Of all the eligible County residents 12 years and older, County Health Officer Dr. Tom Locke reported that 70% have been fully vaccinated. “This is among the highest rates in the state,” he said. “ But it’s not where we really need to be to control the variants.  We need that population immunity rates in the 80-85% range to really control that transmission of variants, and we knew very early on we were in a race with the variants that if we didn’t get people vaccinated soon enough.” Locke said vaccine-induced immunity is much more protective than natural immunity, and “you don’t run the risk that 10-30% getting long COVID or the 5-10% risk of being hospitalized, or if your child is around 2% of children who are getting COVID-19 are now being hospitalized.” He stressed that people who have had COVID-19 “still need to get vaccinated because it is the only way to give them good protection from the variants that are likely coming.” It takes five to six weeks from the first vaccination to be fully protected. COVID-19 cases in Jefferson are circulating among those who are unvaccinated. Dr. Locke noted of the 10 cases reported last week, five were in one household. Every person tested positive. None were hospitalized . As of today, two people are in the hospital and one is  in the ICU with COVID-19.

Director Of Emergency Management Wilie Bence said DEM is winding down its pop-up clinic efforts. They will be ready to handle long-term vaccination strategy focused on distributing booster shots when they’re available. If you have questions about vaccinations, are homebound or just need help scheduling, call 360-344-9791. He noted hospitalizations and bed occupancy are up across the state due to people choosing elective surgeries.

Submit your Public Health questions to Dr. Tom Locke by emailing [email protected]. Note: The weekly deadline for these to be submitted is on Fridays at noon, to be answered at the following Monday’s BOCC meeting.

Community Tides ~7/09

Quilcene is a small and vibrant community that, along with Brinnon’s lush lands and their residents, makes up an amazing southern complement to our beautiful Jefferson County.  We’ll focus on South County’s families and children, community updates, and events for this edition of Community Tides, and talk about Quilcene and Brinnon’s emergence from the pandemic. Siobhan gives us a South County overview, and then we join special guests Trish Beathard, Superintendent and Principal of the Brinnon school, and Kathleen Kler, a nurse, an artist, and former District 3 County Commissioner, to fill us in on the details.
