New Show! Radio Kilombo Airs 10-11pm Thursdays

DJ David BoNobO launched his KPTZ program El Ritpo Subversivo, in October 2019. Now, as of 11/04/21, it is re-branded as Radio Kilombo adding new co-host Thais Oliviera aka “DJ Brazil Nut” and will air every week on KPTZ from 10-11pm.

Radio Kilombo curates the Earth’s finest collection of seductive African and Afro-Latin grooves. The selections are three parts club culture, one part roots culture, and all parts positive. From Global Bass to Afro-Latin Folkloric to Rare Groove, join David and Thais for their weekly convocation, hear the story of the rhythms, and let the music stir your soul!

#188 Gina Landon: A New Restaurant Joins the Scene

(Airdate: November 2, 2021) Our Town host Maryanne McNellis interviews Gina Landon, the owner of the Farm & Sea Grill in Port Hadlock. Gina signed the lease on her restaurant-to-be in February 2020 – not realizing that her timing was disastrous. She vowed that COVID-19 was not going to count her out even before she started. The restaurant opened in July 2020. Her not-so-secret weapon was hiring staff who helped create the remarkable community feel of the late, lamented Don’s Pharmacy Lunch Counter. Their friendly chatter is now helping create a warm glow at the Farm & Sea. Summer business was great but now we are in the dark days of winter. Gina’s facing the same problems as all restaurateurs — including staff shortages and supply chain woes. As a new restaurant, every little thing matters. But if pickles are hard to find, she will find them somewhere. She’s determined to succeed!

Jefferson County October 2021 Case Numbers

After seeing a record 305 new cases in September, Jefferson County recorded only 164 new cases in October. However, our case rate is still very high, in part because the Delta variant can quickly spread in households, places of work, etc. Health officials continue to urge that everyone wear masks in indoor public places and maintain social distance. About 74% of new COVID-19 infections locally are in people who are not fully vaccinated. Many of these cases involve household transmission or contact with someone who has traveled out of state. While people 0 to 19 years old account for just 14% of our population, they represent 25% of our total COVID-19 infections. Fortunately, vaccines for children 5 to 11 years old will be available shortly in Jefferson County. Meanwhile, people 60 and over account for 46% of our population but just 25% of our total COVID-19 infections. Of those 65 and over in our county, about 91% were fully vaccinated as of November 1.

It’s Showtime!

As fall makes its way into our world, with all the abundance of an attendant new season upon us, it is time that we here at KPTZ spend a few days raising money to keep our offerings abundant. We haven’t “passed the hat” for half a year — so now it’s time to launch our Fall Fund Drive. With our goal of $50,000, we are asking that you make a donation to keep KPTZ a vital part of our community: Always and in All Ways. With all of the music, news and other programming we offer, it is — of course — necessary to periodically raise funds to make it all happen.

You may have heard recently that national and regional news operations are continuing to conglomerate, with fewer and fewer news correspondents and news sources to report the important stories of the day. And in this kind of climate, having a solid, credible — LOCAL — news source is of utmost importance. Whether it’s about climate change, voting rights, public health concerns, housing issues or any number of news stories affecting us in the Port Townsend and Jefferson County area, local reporters getting the news from local sources is even more valuable. As part of our News service, KPTZ also provides daily community calendars and listings so you are aware of the events happening around here.

And then there’s the MUSIC. Unlike other radio stations you can tune into, KPTZ’s volunteer DJs curate and disseminate each of their own music programs. Whether you’re into jazz, classical, world music or rock ’n’ roll, you’ll find it here on KPTZ. In 2001, David Bonobo created the program ¡SouLbRosO! for KillRadio.org, an L.A.-based internet radio collective. In 2010, he launched the now defunct Radio Machete podcast network. It included his own program, El Ritmo Subversivo, which he brought to KPTZ 91.9 FM in Port Townsend, WA in 2018. In 2021, it was re-branded as Radio Kilombo with new co-host Thais Oliviera. DJ BoNobO has played for club and festival audiences across Mexico, Cuba, California, and Washington state. As a music journalist, he has interviewed Lila Downs, Rocky Dawuni, Sidestepper, Sandra Izadore, Jeremy Sole, Celso Piña, Antibalas, and more.

Thais Oliveira hails from Sao Paolo, Brazil’s largest city. Her father was a Jazz musician, and she has absorbed much of his musical knowledge through osmosis. After working as a journalist in Sao Paolo for several years, she set out to see the world. While traveling, she met her husband in Alaska before going on to visit Europe, Mexico, and Cuba. She has long held a deep fascination with African culture within her native Brazil, and she considers herself to be a student of that and other forms of African rooted culture across the Caribbean, Latin America, and Africa. Thais brings a wealth of experience and first hand knowledge of Brazilian music with her as she embarks on this new adventure as co-host of Radio Kilombo.

County Public Health Report ~ 11/01

The following is a summary of the presentation during the Public Health briefings at this week’s Board of County Commissioners meeting made by Jefferson and Clallam County Public Health Officer Dr. Allison Berry. Also Willie Bence, Director, Director of Emergency Management, gave a report. The summary was provided by and used with the permission of Jefferson County Government.

Health Officer Dr. Allison Berry this morning said Jefferson County is “plateauing” with a COVID-19 case rate of 251 per 100,000, and a positivity rate of 4.6. Three hospitalized COVID patients were discharged over the weekend and only one person is currently hospitalized. No deaths were added; the count remains at 17. Dr. Berry said that 74% of COVID cases are among the unvaccinated. “I think the biggest news of late is that we have seen the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccinations approved by the FDA for kids 5 to 11,” she reported “We’re very excited about that. We’re very hopeful about seeing this age group vaccinated soon.” She said the vaccine will be reviewed by the CDC and others before distribution can be scheduled. “This is the first time in a while that we actually have a new formulation of a vaccine to be shipped throughout the country,” Dr. Berry said. “If this gets CDC approval, most likely we will see vaccinations in this age range next week.” Pfizer’s pediatric formulation of the COVID-19 vaccine is a third of the dose given to adults or older children. She also addressed misinformation surrounding the vaccine for children. “What we do see is COVID-19 blessedly is less severe in children than it is in adults, but it still can be incredibly severe,” she said. Dr. Berry cited some statistics, reporting that nationwide, approximately 67,000 children have been hospitalized and over 650 have died due to the COVID virus. Among those who are hospitalized, 30% had no underlying conditions at all. And, for the other 70%, the vast majority of them actually had relatively mild underlying conditions, things like asthma. “I really would encourage parents to use this incredible resource to protect their children, especially as we move into the holiday season,” Dr. Berry urged.

Making Caskets

(Airdate: November 1, 2021) Attention Please! for November 1, All Souls Day, tells of neighbors building caskets for their friends and family members who have recently passed. This short documentary, produced in the early 1980s by Phil Andrus, was based on interviews of women and men who lived on an island north of Port Townsend, a location they preferred not to identify.
