Community Tides ~ 12/17

In this edition of Community Tides, KPTZ’s Chris Bricker and co-host Siobhan Canty, President and CEO of Jefferson Community Foundation, talk with Sara Penhallegan, Founder and Director of Center Valley Animal Rescue. Since it’s inception in 2002, Sara’s vision has become a legacy of love, compassion, and the right for helpless creatures to have a “second chance” at life. The love and care of abused and abandoned animals is the soul of this organization. We discuss the center’s growth, the animals both large and small, the wide range of experience and expertise that staff and volunteer veterinarians provide, as well as the variety of volunteer opportunities available to members of our Peninsula communities.

Wild Rose Chorale Candlelight Concert

For the December Candlelight Concert live broadcast on KPTZ, Trinity United Methodist Church will host Wild Rose Chorale, the Port Townsend a cappella group, on Thursday, December 16 at 7pm for a short concert with no intermission. This concert marks the return of live Candlelight Concerts at the church – the first in 20 months. “We’re happily singing together again, masked and vaccinated, and hoping to bring a little Christmas cheer to our community,” said Wild Rose director Leslie Lewis. Attendees should plan on arriving early – doors will open at 6:30pm and admittance is limited to 50 people. Personal ID and proof of vaccination will be required for entry and masks will be mandatory. The performance will also be streamed live at https://trinityumcpt.org/ in addition to being simulcast on KPTZ FM 91.9.

This year, they have invited two high school interns to join them for the season. Says director Leslie Lewis, “They add such a youthful zest to our group and have filled out our sound nicely.”

Trinity United Methodist Church is located at 609 Taylor Street, across from the Community Center, Uptown. Admission is free, with a suggested donation $10 per person.  Half of the proceeds from this concert go toward the Wild Rose Chorale’s scholarship fund, which makes awards to promising high school and college students who pursue choral music in their post-secondary education. For more information about the Wild Rose Chorale, visit wildrosechorale.org, email [email protected], phone 360-385-1402, or like them on Facebook.

#191 Steve King, PT Public Works Director

(Airdate: December 14, 2021) Our Town host Maryanne McNellis interviews Steve King, PT’s Public Work Director. Steve literally started his job on pandemic lockdown day – March 20, 2020. The office was pretty empty and the town was a ghost town. But, as an essential worker, Steve jumped right in. He has a long background in government work. Most of his career, he worked for the city of Wenatchee. He rose through the ranks there for 18 years. But then he got an itch. He took off some banked vacation time and set out to walk the world-famous Camino de Santiago – a 500 mile trek across the Pyrenees through France and Spain. When he returned he decided he needed a career change. Port Townsend seemed like the perfect fit. Starting during the pandemic hasn’t been easy. Now he’s involved in almost every infrastructure project around town – including the new water contract with the mill, upgrading our roads, and overseeing several new housing projects. Did you know there’s a 100-unit project called Madrona Ridge that’s coming down the pipeline? That’s the tip of the iceberg.
