County Public Health Report ~ 11/03/25

Dr. Allison Berry said that the latest local surge of COVID -19 is abating, but Influenza is on the rise. She recommends the flu vaccine for all and said that if you need a COVID booster, the flu vaccine and an RSV shot it’s fine to get them at the same time. She also spoke about SNAP benefits which are up in the air right now. She said the people most affected by this are Veterans and children, and said the better fed that people are, the less likely they are to contract disease and place a greater burden on the healthcare system. Willie Bence said there is a seminar on WINTER PREPAREDNESS at the Jefferson County Library in Port Hadlock on Tuesday, November 4 at 10:30am (which is Election Day, by the way).

Brewocracy Now ~ 10/30/25

KPTZ’s Taylor Clark was joined by three Port Townsend department heads: Police Chief Tom Olson, Planning Director Emma Bolin, and Director of Public Works Steve King. We explored what is happening with respect to the proposed closing of the homeless encampment on the Evans Vista property. We talked about the city’s partnership with assistance organizations, and the city council’s action to streamline the permitting process for help these organizations respond to homelessness.

#273 Steve King, Planning Our Future

(Airdate: October 28, 2025) Maryanne interviews Steve King, Port Townsend’s Public Works Director. Steve’s been grappling with our complex issues since he joined the city five years ago. An early accomplishment was getting the mill to pay for water usage, just like any other customer. Some of the pipes for our water system are over 100 years old. Steve’s team is racing the clock – trying to replace those pipes before they collapse. That’s just one issue facing the town. The lack of affordable housing and the sorry state of our streets are also major issues. Voters overwhelmingly passed a measure to raise taxes to help pay for street repairs. Results aren’t in yet but that money only began to flow in 2024. The lack of workforce housing – aka affordable housing – is also on everyone’s radar.
