JCIRA, part 1

(Airdate: October 26, 2023) History is steeped in ideas sparked over cups of coffee. This humble cup of coffee is one of the origin stories of the Jefferson County Immigrant Rights Advocates (JCIRA). JCIRA serves our newer residents, immigrants, who are seeking to rebuild their lives, often fractured by poverty, conflict and political instability. Join Missy Nielsen of Everybody Can for the first part of a special 3-part series on this important topic. Board member Jean Walat helps to explain the often-misunderstood aspects and underpinnings of immigration as well as the services provided through JCIRA that serve to ease their settling in.

#642 Rat Island Caspian Tern, part 2

(Airdate: October 25, 2023) Nature Now host Jackie Canterbury talks with Dr. Steve Hampton about the plight of the Caspian Tern colony on Rat Island near Flagler campground on Marrowstone Island. Hampton discusses the events of 2022 and 2023 that led to an 80% loss of the breeding colony due to human disturbance and an avian flu outbreak. If we understand the historical perspective of the Caspian Tern dilemma, perhaps humans and the agencies responsible for the management of Rat Island can make 2024 less painful.

In September Jackie spoke with Dr. Katie Hanan, Wildlife Veterinarian and Dr. Scott Pearson, Senior Research Scientist – both with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife about the avian flu outbreak on Rat Island. The program allowed listeners to understand the basics of the Avian Influenza virus, its pathogenicity, transmission, and relationship to the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic.

(Airdate: October 23, 2023) Jim Burke interviews Ward Serrill, aka KPTZ’s DJ Was, who is the director of the documentary “DANCING WITH THE DEAD: Red Pine and The Art Of Translation”, about Bill Porter, a Port Townsend man whose pen name is Red Pine. He has translated many ancient Chinese poets and written about his trips to visit with hermits in the hills of China. The film opens the weekend of October 27 at the Rose Theatre.
