County Public Health Report ~ 10/02/23

The following is a recording of the presentation during the Public Health briefings at this week’s Board of County Commissioners meeting made by Jefferson and Clallam County Public Health Officer Dr. Allison Berry. Anna Piasecki, Program Coordinator sat in for Willie Bence, Director of Emergency Management, and gave a report. She spoke about the GREAT SHAKEOUT, the earthquake preparedness drill taking place on October 19 at 10:19am.
As reported by Jim Burke, during the Public Health report to the BOCC, Dr. Allison Berry said we are in the midst of a real COVID-19 surge here now. Across the US, cases have plateaued so we should level off here too in the coming weeks. The cases are all the common omicron variants that the new booster shots are designed to ward off. The booster shot supplies have been a bit short, but are becoming more available. Anyone who has had a recent case should wait two months before seeking the booster. Flu and RSV shots ARE available now, but those cases are low right now. If anyone wants fewer side effects they can space out the vaccine shots by a couple of weeks, but the COVID-19 booster should be FIRST as COVID-19 cases are everywhere now in the community.
Emma Bolin, PT Planning Director

(Airdate: October 3, 2022) Maryanne interviews Emma Bolin, PT’s Director of Planning and Community Development. As a kid, Emma dreamed about becoming a professional rock climber. She turned her love of the outdoors and mountains into something more practical. Her love of both brought her to the Pacific Northwest. Now she’s in charge of planning for Port Townsend – a Pacific Northwest gem. Affordable housing; what to do about the golf course; removing the poplar trees on Sims Way and trying to find a solution for our broken streets – these are just some of the issues Emma and her team are studying. Zoning changes lurk at the heart of most issues. Did you know that since April virtually every residential property can legally add two ADUs? And all that bother about off street parking? Nope, that’s gone now! And if you want an ADU that really sets you free, well, tiny houses on wheels are licensed like your car. Forget about most permitting, etc.
Key City Public Theatre / Northwind Art School

Then, Jim talks with cast members and the Author of Key City Public Theatre’s new production of The Canterville Ghost.
Community Tides ~ 10/01/23

Welcome to another edition of Community Tides. On alternate weeks, Sundays at Noon and Tuesdays at 5:30, KPTZ’S Chris Bricker joins Co-Host Siobhan Canty, President and CEO of Jefferson Community Foundation, to explore our vibrant community of creative and innovative citizens who continue to do good work. And speaking of “creative and innovative,” we have something special for you today. The Flying Karamazov Brothers, the New Old Time Chautauqua, and the original Chautauqua movement all have history here. What is a “Chautauqua” you might ask? Singer/songwriter Jim Page interviewed Karamazovs and New Old Time Chautauqua co-founder Paul Magid not long ago, and we thought it would be fun bring that interview to you today, thanks to Jim and his radio show on KBCS in Bellevue.
