(Airdate: August 13, 2024) Booklovers’ Cafe welcomes Patricia Hauschildt, author of Searching For Rose: A Mother, a daughter and decades that changed the world. In her book Pat explores the everyday life of a woman who lived through the 20th century in the United States. Pat draws on family stories but also research that reveals the details of the impact of the depression and World War II on the women of the Pacific Northwest. She also discusses her own ten year writing and publishing journey to explain the pitfalls and the rewards of self publishing.

In this episode of Our Working Waterfront, Port Director and co-host Eron Berg gives us his monthly update, and then KPTZ’s Chris Bricker and co-host Port Commissioner Pam Petranek visit with Tucker Piontek. He’s an instructor at the Northwest School of Wooden Boat Building. Tucker’s relationship with boats began with childhood and young adult adventures on rivers, lakes, and coastal waters. As many young sailors have done over the years, he sailed into our town, fell. In love with it, and discovered the Boat School. He’ll tell us about how his unique career journey led him later on to becoming an instructor there, his thoughts on craftsmanship and mentor relationships, and how he and three classes of students built the Nordic Folk Boat Fern, which rests on the hard for final touches before she’s shipped out to the lovely man who had commissioned her. Fern is destined to live on the Great Lakes as the Boat School’s “Ambassador.”

The reason we’re staying here is that they have hot water, and our room looks out on Wenshan Hill and the grave of Li Guang one of the men responsible for bringing the Silk Road under Chinese control….

(Airdate: August 12, 2024) Darcie Chace Benefit Exhibition, at the Grover Gallery, through August 2024. Darcie Chace was a self-taught artist, who spent much time in Port Townsend with her mother, Linda Landkammer and sister, Daniella Chace. Darcie was born with Down’s Syndrome, but was determined to live as “Normal” as possible. She discovered her passion for drawing and poetry, and worked every day to express herself through art. KPTZ Producers Anna Marie Brown and Larry Stein explored Darcie’s story and artwork with her mother and sister, and Julie Read, the exhibit’s curator, a painter, and one of the partners in the Grover Gallery. All sales of Darcie Chace’s artwork will benefit Olympic Neighbors, an organization working to build and support home and community for people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD).

(Airdate: August 9, 2024) This week on County Connections co-hosts Jim Burke and Commissioner Kate Dean speak with Dr. Allison Berry, Public Health Officer for Jefferson and Clallam Counties about why she became a doctor, the difference between healthcare and public health, trends in Covid-19, and dealing with atmospheric smoke .

Taylor Clark and Port Townsend CIty Manager John Mauro recapped some of the things that have been going on for the city this past week, including (but not limited to): theRecompete (federal) award of $35m for the region, appointment of a new city council member, the Lawrence street transportation project, and the TBD funding; plus the skatepark lighting.

It’s Primary Season! These days especially, we wonder about the challenges our educators face in encouraging our youth to be active in our democracy and its electoral process. KPTZ’s Chris Bricker and co-host Siobhan Canty, President & CEO of Jefferson Community Foundation, join Dr. Linda Rosenbury, Superintendent of Port Townsend School District, for an important discussion surrounding classroom challenges, solutions, and social responsibilities in navigating a politically charged and norm-busting environment.
