This month on the Public Health Report to the Jefferson County Board of County Commissioners, Public Health Officer Dr. Allison Berry talked about the surge that is currently happening with RSV and FLU, especially among children in schools. Both of these viruses can present as common colds, so to err on the side of caution, she recommends staying home if sick, wearing masks in crowded spaces, and getting seen in a clinic or doctor’s office for testing and treatment. Avian Influenza has seen 67 human cases across the US, but none here in Jefferson County, almost all those cases among workers in poultry and dairy farms. Cats need to be kept indoors if they tend to kill birds, as they can contract avian flu. Your cat can give you avian flu if they get it, so if your cat is sick, get them to the vet.
Director of Emergency Management Willie Bence recommended more following distance when driving in this snowy weather. We are predicted to have more this coming Wednesday.

KPTZ is excited to welcome pianist Tony Lu to the Trinity United Methodist Church on Thursday, February 27 at 7pm. This is the next installment of our Candlelight Concert series and will also be simulcast on 91.9 FM KPTZ. Tony will perform works by renowned composers such as Beethoven, Gluck, Schubert, Schumann, Faure, and Brahms. Tony teaches music history, theory, classical improvisation, musicianship, and piano literature in Bennington, Vermont, and will give a brief historical background before each piece. A seasoned performer, he has made appearances and given master classes across the United States, and frequently incorporates his own solo transcriptions and improvises cadenzas into his music. His research interests include classical keyboard improvisation pedagogy, piano solo and duet transcriptions of symphonic and chamber works, and 20th/21st-century neoclassical piano repertoire.

KPTZ is excited to join Rainshadow Recording in welcoming Rachel Sumner and the Traveling Light to the Palindrome in Port Townsend on February 20 at 7:30pm. Fresh off a first place win at the 2023 Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival band competition, Rachel Sumner and Traveling Light have been captivating audiences throughout the northeast. With songs as sweet and biting as the nectar and venom in her voice, Sumner’s lyric-forward writing and penchant for chord progressions demand something far beyond folk conventions, highlighting the acrobatic range of her band. Though Sumner has roots in both the bluegrass and classical worlds, this is singer-songwriter folk through and through. A seasoned performer, she spent her early career on the bluegrass circuit, singing and writing with the genre-bending roots group Twisted Pine. Since setting out on her own, Sumner’s songs have been critically acclaimed.
