Wow, it was a year ago today that Scott Wilson wrote the editorial Here comes KPTZ in the Leader:
“KPTZ, the new nonprofit radio station, is launching this week. Turn your FM radio dial to 91.9 at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 14 to hear the first words and music from the station….
The new station will have an immediate impact on local life. Mostly driven by volunteers, it will feature music spun by local experts and musicians, talk shows devoted to local topics and even newscasts.
Creating the local radio station has been a labor of love since Sherry Jones, Collin Brown, Colin Foden and Ann Katzenbach got together with the idea in 2006. Their talks led to an application to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and a license was granted in 2007. Since then the station incorporated, Jones left the board and National Public Radio alum Larry Stein, together with engineer Bill Putney, joined the board.
The City of Port Townsend came through with an offer of studio space at the Mountain View campus, now leased by the city. That provided 750 square feet for a broadcast facility. And in November 2010 the station got its final permit for a radio tower.
Now, it’s ready to go live with local talent.
Just one example is Ray Schroff, featured by Nicholas Johnson in this week’s Leader. Schroff will be hosting a two-hour weekly show called “Dream City Jukebox” that you will be hearing shortly after KPTZ goes on the air. Schroff is one of dozens of people who will find their new voice on our local airways.
Congratulations to all who helped make this debut possible, and we’re looking forward to hearing the first programs on KPTZ.” – Scott Wilson
