NEWSLETTER WINTER 2010
KPTZ TO BUY FIRST EQUIPMENT
Hurrah! KPTZ recently sent out its first set of requests for bids on transmission equipment in accordance with the grant received from the Public Telecommunications and Facilities Program. Helping with the technical side of these bids are two retired radio engineers, Lou Schneider and Bill Putney. Their volunteered expertise will put KPTZ "On Air" sometime this year.
MOUNTAIN VIEW CLASSROOM TO BECOME KPTZ STUDIO
We are negotiating a studio lease with the City of Port Townsend for the use of a portable classroom at Mountain View. Local designer and builder, Paul Kaase, volunteered to draw up plans for the remodel of the classroom into a working studio.
The space is about 1000 square feet. It is centrally located and next door to the police department which should facilitate our emergency broadcasting function should the need arise. Local emergencies such as the break of a downtown water main earlier this winter show how valuable a local radio station can be.
KPTZ SEEKS BUILDERS AND MATERIALS
We are fine-tuning studio plans for some walls, sound-proofing, new wiring, and equipment for our new studio space. As soon as we have our lease and the necessary permits, we will get to work. Several people have said they would lend their building skills to this project. If you would like to volunteer, let us know at info@kptz.org. We will alert volunteers as we get closer to the actual work.
Building materials: sheet rock, plywood, lumber, are also on our list. If you have something extra in this department, we'd like to hear from you.
High on our wish list are some good PC computers with printers. We will also need phones and a phone system if anyone has or knows how to get such equipment.
Add to that list some furniture: tables, chairs, a few desks, file cabinets, perhaps some rugs and lamps. If you have something that you think might be usable, Email us at info@kptz.org. We can pick up.
LOCAL TALENT PROVIDES PROGRAMMING
Our call for programmers has brought forth an impressive assortment of local talent, and it’s certainly not too late. Send your idea and an audio sample via snail mail (po box 2091) or Email (this can be on CD, MP3 or cassette). If you don’t know much about recording and editing, we will be doing training once the studio is set up. We would like to have heard from you beforehand, so jump in and send us your ideas.
DONATIONS
Many thanks to those who responded to our Year End Campaign which yielded close to $13,000 in contributions. We still need about $12,000 to meet our portion of the PTFP matching grant. If you pledged and have yet to contribute, here's one more reminder to send in your contribution so we can build and equip the studio. You can send a check to us at PO Box 2091, Port Townsend, WA 98368 or pay on our site via Pay Pal, click to donate to KPTZ now!
HELP US CREATE COMMUNITY RADIO
Our PTFP grant only covers equipment. We need to raise additional funds for construction, furnishings, mailings, studio maintenance, utilities and a host of incidentals. To this end, we are looking for a volunteer fund-raiser. Would you like to bring your skills to this exciting and creative endeavor? There's a job description on the Web Site, kptz.org! We would love to hear from you.
We are also looking for a database manager. Do you have experience in this area of computers? It's not a time-consuming job but must be done regularly and consistently to keep everything current.
LOOKING AHEAD
Thanks for your support and patience. We look forward to having our studio remodeled during the spring and expect to be at the Farmers' Market occasionally to answer questions and continue fund-raising.
Thank you
