Programming and Programmers
Joining us On Air
From: Larry Stein, Program Coordinator
KPTZ hopes to be
broadcasting by early 2010. What will we be broadcasting? Maybe
you !!
We will need many
Volunteers to run KPTZ, from on-air DJs and music presenters, to
interviewers, news and documentary producers, to writers, artists,
politicos, philosophers, all sharing their passions and ideas.
We’ll also need
behind-the-scenes volunteers… fund raising, phone answering, member
relations, web wizards, tech people, etc. More later.
Programming on KPTZ
Our
programming will be guided by values stated in KPTZ’s initial
planning.
Key
values that will be directly connected to programming are:
Local Production and
Relevance
We want to present as much
radio as possible that is locally produced, and about our area and
its concerns.
Inclusiveness and Balance
KPTZ will be a voice for
the richness and diversity of our area, and will include balanced
coverage of social and political issues.
Quality
Our programming will be of
high, professional quality. There will be guidance and training
from our staff for constant improvement of our on- air sound.
Emergency Communication
KPTZ will be a provider of emergency local
communications.
Education and Light Heartedness
These two values will be intentional components of all programming.
Radio is fun, and
we should all learn from it.
-------
We
are in the planning phases for programming.
We would like to
hear from potential programmers. Here are some guidelines for
submitting ideas.
Interviews and Talk
On KPTZ we want to
interview interesting people…in our studios, on location, on the
phone. What topics would you like to explore? Who would you
interview? How long can you carry on an interesting conversation
for the radio?
Submit a demo of your
interviewing skills, your radio personality, and interesting
guests. (demo guidelines below)
Describe your areas of
interest, your background and experience, and why you want to join
KPTZ on air. How often do you think you could do a program (weekly,
monthly, occasional)?
Music
What music do you want to
play, why should we listen to you presenting it?
Do people want to hear
it? Can you make them appreciate it through your enthusiasm and
knowledge?
We will need to hear an
audition of your program idea. (demo submission guidelines
below) The ultimate program will either be done live as a Host in
our studio, or recorded for broadcast in your particular time slot.
We’re interested in your
presentation, the flow of your music choices, your intros
and transitions, your personality and enthusiasm. You
need not include entire music cuts for your demo, but you are
welcome to if you wish.
Please supply a written
description of your show idea, and a complete list of the music
you are playing in your demo. (artist, title, album, date).
Also what other music do
you want to play? Will you do interviews with artists when they are
available?
How often do you see
yourself doing a program? Why do you want to join KPTZ on air?
News, Documentary, Literary
We want the sound of life
in the Port Townsend area on KPTZ. We want to discuss the issues
facing the region; feature profiles of notable and ordinary
citizens; document the cultural, business, and social environment;
promote, present and publicize worthwhile events and activities.
Do you have experience or
interest in gathering news, reporting, documentary, or literature
and drama for radio? Tell us how and why you want to participate in
our programming.
Send us samples (video or audio).
Commentary and Short-form Programming
Do you have an idea for a
regular short radio segment on a particular subject?
Birdnote,
or StarDate or Writers’ Almanac on public radio are
good examples.
Could you do a weekly, or
daily short piece on some relevant subject or theme?
We have already had ideas
submitted for: local film criticism; wildlife; word origins and
usage; singing; environmental concerns. The range of possibilities
for personal essay and commentary is endless, and exciting.
Demo Submission Guidelines
Submit a program demo or
work sample on CD or in a .wav or MP3 format file, or even on
cassette. (samples longer than 15 min. should be sent on CD)
Produce it with the best
equipment you can, preferably edit it on a computer (Audacity
is a free audio edit program on the web)
In the future we will have
training sessions, editing and coaching to help you mold your work
into broadcast-ready material.
If you are interested in
live DJ work, try to make it as “live” as you can, not highly edited
after you record. The same goes for in-studio interviews.
News
and documentary will of course be highly edited.
Please include a station
ID every 10 to 15 minutes.
